Psalm 145 (December 16th, 2025)

Psalm 145Brian Lee

Summary

Psalm 145 is David’s song of praise to the LORD as King. Praise is not treated as a mood but as a daily posture. Praise happens when God's people see the character of God and place their trust in the life of the covenant community:

One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts (v. 4).

At the center stands God’s character:

The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love (v. 8).

This King is not distant. He upholds the weak, and God’s reign does not fade:

Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations (v. 13).

David ends with a horizon as vast as creation:

Let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever (v. 21).

Who is God

God is the eternal King whose greatness cannot be measured and whose mercy cannot be exhausted. He is infinite! Yet God's majesty does not make Him remote. The LORD is near to all who call on him.

The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth (v. 18)

Also, God is generous beyond measure:

You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing (v. 16).

What is our guilt

We often praise selectively. We sing with gladness when life is stable, when our prayers seem to be answered quickly, when our days feel strong. But if we praise God for who He is then we should echo David who sang,

Every day I will bless you (v. 2).

We are guilty of drifting into a faith that is selectively situational rather than continual. We also treat God’s greatness as something we can manage, thereby reducing Him to our expectations, confusing familiarity with reverence.

How does Grace shine

The LORD’s reign is not merely powerful; it is personally good.

“The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made” (v. 9).

Just because we fall doesn't mean He discards us.

“The LORD upholds all who are falling” (v. 14).

Ultimately, this King’s goodness finds its clearest form in Jesus Christ, who is the true Son of David. He brought the kingdom near, bore our guilt, and lifted up the lowly. Because of Christ, our praise is not performance. The Grace of God redeems us so that through our grateful life, we can praise God forever.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

You deserve our praise to be more than occasional words.

Please teach us to bless your name every day, not only when life feels secure but even when we are weak and unsure.

We confess that we often think of you as too small. We forget how great you are.

When we are empty, thank you for opening your hand and providing what we need. Draw us near to yourself and teach us to call upon you in truth. Shape us into a people who declare your mighty works to the next generation, and let our lives bear witness to your everlasting kingdom.

In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
