Building Up a Praying Community

“My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.” (Isaiah 56:7)

Every true revival in church history has begun in prayer. When God’s people gather to pray, they invite heaven to reshape earth, starting with their own hearts. Yet in our fast-paced, results-driven culture, prayer often becomes the first thing we talk about but the last thing we actually do.

A praying church is not simply a church that prays more often. It is a community learning to depend on God together. In a praying community, we begin to see ministry not as a performance but as participation in God’s work. We learn to wait on Him, to listen, to weep, and to rejoice in His presence. Prayer becomes the unseen backbone of everything else—worship, discipleship, mission, and fellowship.

This is why our prayer ministry is so vital. Those who faithfully gather each week to pray are quietly building the spiritual infrastructure of our church. Their prayers may never appear on a schedule or stage, but heaven hears. And the church stands stronger because of them.

If you want to grow in this vision, I encourage you to listen to Paul E. Miller’s podcast, “A Praying Church.” It’s a companion to his book of the same title and is available through our church's homepage under "Resources." The podcast explores how prayer can transform a congregation from the inside out, weaving together personal stories, biblical wisdom, and practical guidance for both leaders and members. It teaches the why, what, and how of corporate prayer in a way that is both realistic and deeply hopeful.

Let’s continue to build this praying community at Riverside—one conversation with God at a time. As we do, we may discover that prayer is the real and actual work of ministry.

Lord, make us a house of prayer for all nations.

In His Grace Alone,

Pastor Brian Lee
