“When the Battle Belongs to the Lord”

(Reflections from 2 Chronicles 20)

In these months, I have been both comforted and challenged by the Word of God, primarily through our readings in 2 Chronicles, which follows the Scripture Union's schedule. The kings of Judah remind us that the health of God’s people never depended on numbers, charisma, or clever strategy. It depended on one thing: whether they sought the Lord with all their heart.

When Jehoshaphat faced a vast coalition army threatening to destroy Judah, he didn’t turn to human alliances. He prayed:

“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” (2 Chron. 20:12)

That has become my prayer for our church. We may not have clear answers about the future, but we know where to look for them. Our strength will not come from plans or personalities, but from prayer and praise.

When Judah lifted their voices to sing, “Give thanks to the Lord, for His steadfast love endures forever,” God fought their battle for them. The valley of danger became the Valley of Blessing.

We may be in such a valley now—not a valley of decline, but a valley of decision. Will we rely on human wisdom, or will we seek the Lord together in humility and faith?

God often prunes before He multiplies. He reduces our strength so that His glory might be revealed. I believe that’s what He is doing among us. The church that worships in weakness is the church that God delights to use.

Let us fix our eyes again on the Lord. Let us sing even before the victory comes. For the battle is not ours—it belongs to the Lord.

“Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God’s… You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf.” (2 Chronicles 20:15, 17)
